Winter 2017/2018 NEWSLETTER
As we endure the winter season and count down days to our April 23 annual fundraiser at Jasna Polana, the Staff and Board of Directors at The First Tee of Greater Trenton (“TFTGT”) would like to take the time to THANK YOU for your support and generosity which has allowed us to continue to impact the lives of young people in the Greater Trenton community by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
A Once in a Lifetime Experience at the 2017 President’s Cup at
Liberty National in Jersey City, NJ
A deserving group of participants from The First Tee of Greater Trenton was selected by the First Tee and PGA Tour to serve as standard bearers when the United States competed against an International team in the Presidents Cup at New Jersey’s Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City from September 28-October 1. For our participants, it was a great honor and a once in a lifetime experience. What a fortunate opportunity to be inside the ropes and in such proximity with the world’s greatest golfers.
Our chapter along with other local NJ/NY chapters hosted a special event on closing Sunday. One of our members Jacob McGill was interviewed by the Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner and former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. He also joined the owners of Liberty National, Paul and Dan Fireman during a panel discussion. Jacob’s week started on opening Friday as the standard bearer for the first match when U.S. players Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas took on Hideki Matsuyama and Charl Schawrtzel in foursomes. The First Tee of Greater Trenton members included Jacob McGill, Jordan Hughes, Abdullah Vorah, Adriana Ramirez Mukund Chanchlani, Karan Nindra, Raymond Jin, Rithvik Reddy, Aryana Tomer and. Rehan Yadav.
The First Tee of Greater Trenton –
A Positive Youth Development Organization
At The First of Greater Trenton, we have developed programs built on the positive youth development framework. Our programs provide the proven elements: safe places, intentional and trained caring adults, and developmentally appropriate and empowering curricula.
At the core of The First Tee of Greater Trenton programs are Nine Core Values—honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, courtesy, sportsmanship, confidence, judgment and perseverance—which are essential for young people to make positive choices and overcome challenges across all areas of their lives. Additionally, concepts around healthy choices (Nine Healthy Habits) reinforce the importance of physical, social and emotional wellness.
At elementary schools, youth centers and golf facilities, students participate in a seamless golf and character education program, promoting physical activity, introducing them to a lifelong sport and embedding core values and wellness in every lesson.
For young people who progress through certification levels at The First Tee of Greater Trenton, the life skills they develop and hone include social skills, problem solving, goal-setting, resilience skills, managing emotions, working well with others, appreciating diversity and building quality relationships with family and in their community.
In 2018, The First Tee of Greater Trenton will embark on a strategic plan to further increase our footprint and capacity to impact the Trenton area by inspiring adults to mentor, coach, volunteer and invest financially. The ambitious plan, when successfully accomplished, will make The First Tee of Greater Trenton a bigger force for good in society with ever-increasing relevancy in our community.
